Understanding Attestation

An attestation is an authentication of a document. Attestation is required if you are planning to travel outside the country for Higher studies/ Work/ Family residency/ Setup office/ Import-Export. Ideally, Attestation is divided into three categories.

Category 1:

Educational documents:

Educational documents have to be attested by State HRD i.e. from the educational department of the documents issuing state.

Personal documents:

Personal documents have to be attested by the State Home Department/GAD department i.e. from the home department of the documents issuing state.

Commercial documents:

Commercial documents have to be attested by the State Chamber of Commerce where the company is registered.

Category 2:

Ministry of External Affairs or MEA Apostille

Once attestation on Educational/Personal/Commercial documents is completed from State HRD/State HD/GAD/Chamber of Commerce then they are submitted for MEA Apostille or Ministry of External Affairs attestation.

For the Western/European region, the final step of Attestation is MEA Apostille from the Ministry of External Affairs. After the Attestation of the MEA Apostille, the document would be presented for the VISA process or commercial purposes.

Category 3:

After Attestation from the State Department and Ministry of External Affairs, documents will move forward for the third process. i.e. Embassy Attestation process.

Embassies of the Gulf/Asian region attest documents from the consoler section of the Embassy to authenticate the documents.

Without authentication of a document from Embassies, the same will remain invalid.
